Magellan – CL

On the path of Magellan, and of all the sailors who face the hardness of water.

In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan found the passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific at the southern tip of South America. The strait still carries his name.

I came to these waters with a film crew for Thalassa, the French television programme about the sea. Alongside the shoot, I photographed the people who live from the strait: ferry passengers, port workers, sailors, and the boats that end their lives on its beaches.

Each photograph carries one line of a short poem.

Step into the boat
Open your home
Horizon as a goal
Sheltered hope
Escape illusion
Growing on the ground
We do not all have a place
We all have an end
Keep the memory
